JYP Concert in LA
I finally did it!
My first pop concert ever! It was worth every penny I've spent~
Since I was late to concert, I've missed first couple stages and unsure who it was.
The first stage I've watched was of that mysterious new boy project of JYP, G-soul. Very tiny shy boy. He's full of talent, but needs more stage experience. His performance lacks much of stage presence, so it may take awhile before he builds his own stage charisma. But then, I remember Solid before the debut, how they often sang off-key -but they didn't know. But, George, one of the members, was surely talented and promising singer and he is still performing as singer and song writer in Korea today. Could G-soul be another George? Perhaps bigger talent? I think so.
My question, however, is that 'What makes G-soul a commodity as first successful Asian Singer in American Pop Industry?' No doubt that he's a commodity as a singer, but what makes him more competitive than many other American teens and idols? Would JYP successfully package him as desirable Asian product that everyone craves more and more? Nevertheless, I will be watching & cheering him as he grows as THE singer in tough entertainment business.
The second stage was a female singer, jLim. Perhaps because I've heard so many good things about her already through YouTube -Kvariety shows and MVs- I was rather disappointed. Great voice, but again, her stage presence... I was really unimpressed! Seemed a bit too nervous. Where is her charisma?! The concert was not big enough to create such stage freight...
Then the savior appeared! Wonder Girls!! Yay!!!
I was never a fan of this 5-girl dance/singing group before this concert. When they finished their three songs, I've signed up for their fan club. Well, not literally. They were worth the ticket! In my opinion, this group might be a better bet for American market than other two mentioned above. Fits into that stereotype of hot asian girls: natural, cute, sexy, and a bit of 'popped out of the Anime look'. Wonder Girls, to my surprise, seasoned stage entertainers -esp. sunye- and sexier than I ever imagined (10th grade to first year college). Also, I felt that Sunye might be a better bet than JLim in American Market. I see why 'Tell Me' has become such a sensation in Korea. It was not an accident!
The Main Stage:
Could word ever describe JYP? I can only think of one. ENTERTAINER! He is the true Entertainer head to toe. Yeah, yeah, his singing always needed that extra jump which he never acquired. Aside from that, his music...I am still in awe. This guy convinced me to go to the pop concert after all. At the moment, I have nothing to compare/contrast his concert to other singers of similar capacity. The stage design wasn't all that. Simple and practical at most. Lighting was nice. His dancing was great and most of all, his music prevailed the night!
Where does he get all the energy and inspiration? Lately, my inspiration comes from JYP! His devotion in his artistry- composition, dancing, producing concerts and shows, but most of all, his passion in nurturing next gen. entertainers. This guy could be remembered as THE teacher and producer to study under for many talented souls dreaming of becoming next generation stars and entertainers.
My hope for JYP is that he continues to grow as a great musician and entertainer so he could be recorded as the first Asian Male Pop Star in American(and world) Entertainment Industry! :)

김양희의 클래식 산책 칼럼 1: 2008 년 3월 8일(토)
Radio Seoul LA (AM 1650)
